It’s not just people who laugh.

웃는 것은 사람뿐만이 아니다.

Surprisingly, rats laugh too.

놀랍게도 쥐들도 웃는다.

It’s hard to believe, but it’s true!

그것은 믿기 어렵다 하지만 그것은 사실이다!

Some scientists studied the sounds rats make when they play.

몇몇 과학자들은 그들이 놀 때 쥐들이 내는 소리를 연구했다.

They had a special machine that can hear rat sounds.

그들은 쥐의 소리를 들을 수 있는 특수한 기계를 가지고 있었다.

By using this machine, they found out that the rats laughed when they played.

이 기계를 사용해서 그들은 그들이 놀 때 쥐들이 웃는다는 것을 알아냈다.

When the scientists tickled them, the rats laughed really hard.

과학자들이 그것들을 간지럽히자 쥐들이 아주 심하게 웃었다.

“I don’t think that rats tell jokes.

“저는 쥐가 농담을 한다고 생각하지는 않아요.

But they clearly like to have fun and laugh,” said one of the scientists.

하지만 그들은 분명히 즐겁게 놀면서 웃는 것을 좋아해요.”라고 과학자 중 한 명이 말했다.

However, a rat’s laugh is not the same as a person’s laugh.

그러나 쥐의 웃음은 인간의 웃음과 똑같지는 않다.

In fact, the sound is too high for us to hear with our ears.

사실 그 소리는 너무 높아서 우리는 우리의 귀로는 들을 수가 없다.

That’s why the scientists had to use their special machine.

그래서 과학자들은 특수한 기계를 써야만 했던 것이다.

So don’t expect to hear a rat laughing.

그러니 쥐가 웃는 것을 들을 거라고 기대하지는 마라.

But if you have a pet rat, why don’t you tickle it and make it laugh?

하지만 당신이 반려[애완용] 쥐를 키우고 있다면 그것을 간지럽히는 건 어떨까 그리고 그것을 웃게 만들어 보는 건 어떨까?
