Some people hate the taste of cucumbers.

어떤 사람들은 오이의 맛을 싫어한다.

They say cucumbers actually taste bitter.

그들은 오이가 실제로 쓴맛이 난다고 말한다.

In the past, many people believed that there were psychological reasons for this.

과거에는 많은 사람들이 이에 대해 심리적인 이유가 있다고 믿었다.

However, scientists say that the cause is genetic.

그러나 과학자들은 그 원인이 유전적인 것이라고 말한다.

Cucumbers have certain things that only people with a gene called TAS2R38 can taste.

오이는 TAS2R38이라 불리는 유전자를 가진 사람만이 맛볼 수 있는 특정한 것들을 가진다.

These people also find some other foods bitter, including watermelon.

이러한 사람들은 또한 수박을 비롯한 몇몇 다른 음식들도 쓴맛이 난다고 여긴다.

The more the gene develops, the worse these foods taste.

그 유전자가 더 발달할수록, 이 음식들의 맛은 더 나빠진다.

Scientists now call these people “supertasters.”
