Nepal has an unusual tradition.

네팔에는 특이한 전통이 있다.

Young girls are chosen to be living goddesses called Kumari.

어린 소녀들이 Kumari(쿠마리)라고 불리는 살아있는 여신으로 선택된다.

Being a Kumari is a big honor.

Kumari가 되는 것은 큰 영광이다.

So many parents want their daughters to become one.

그래서 많은 부모들이 자신들의 딸이 그것이 되기를 원한다.

However, it can be difficult for the girls.

하지만 그것은 소녀들에게 힘들 수 있다.

To become a Kumari, a girl cannot have any scars.

Kumari가 되려면 소녀는 어떤 흉터도 있어선 안 된다.

And she must have all her teeth.

그리고 그녀는 치아를 모두 가지고 있어야 한다.

She must also have courage and a good voice.

그녀는 또한 용기와 좋은 목소리를 지녀야 한다.

When a girl becomes a Kumari, everything changes.

한 소녀가 Kumari가 되면, 모든 것이 바뀐다.

She leaves her family and lives in a palace.

그녀는 자신의 가족을 떠난다 그리고 궁궐에 산다.

She has to wear red clothes and hair accessories all the time.

그녀는 빨간 옷과 머리 장식을 항상 착용해야 한다.

The life of a Kumari is lonely.

Kumari의 삶은 외롭다.

She can only leave the palace for ceremonies.

그녀는 오직 의식을 위해서 궁궐을 떠날 수 있다.

She can’t even visit her parents.

그녀는 부모님을 방문할 수도 없다.

She must live this way until another girl replaces her.

그녀는 다른 소녀가 그녀를 대신할 때까지 이런 식으로 살아야 한다.

Some people say this tradition is unfair to the girls.

어떤 사람들은 이 전통이 소녀들에게 부당하다고 말한다.
