The Sahara is a dangerous desert.

사하라 사막은 위험한 사막이다.

It can get very hot, and there is little water.

그곳은 매우 뜨거워질 수 있다, 그리고 물은 거의 없다.

But did you know that more people drown in the Sahara than die of thirst?

그런데 당신은 사하라 사막에서 갈증으로 죽는 것보다 더 많은 사람들이 물에 빠져 죽는다는 것을 알고 있었는가?

It sounds strange, but it’s true.

그것은 이상하게 들리지만, 사실이다.

In fact, hundreds of people drowned in one night in 1995.

실제로, 1995년 어느 날 밤에 수백 명의 사람이 익사했다.

It rarely rains in the Sahara.

사하라 사막에는 비가 거의 오지 않는다.

But when it does, it rains very hard.

그런데 비가 오면, 아주 심하게 온다.

And the desert sand can’t soak up the water as quickly as soil can.

그리고 사막의 모래는 토양만큼 빠르게 물을 흡수하지 못한다.

This causes floods to happen suddenly.

이것은 홍수가 갑자기 발생하게 한다.

These are known as flash floods.

이는 돌발 홍수로 알려져 있다.

They are hard to predict because the downpours happen in small areas, and people far away from those areas have no idea what is happening there.

그것은 예측하기가 어렵다 왜냐하면 폭우가 협소한 지역에서 일어나고, 그 지역에서 멀리 떨어져 있는 사람들은 거기서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 모르기 때문이다.

When water suddenly begins flowing through valleys, people are seldom prepared.

They don’t expect floods in a place where there is hardly any water.

그들은 물이 거의 없는 곳에서의 홍수를 예상하지 못한다.

Sadly, many people drown as a result.

So be careful if you plan to travel across the Sahara!
