In 16th century Japan, several leaders were fighting to become the most powerful.

16세기 일본에서는 가장 강력한 자가 되기 위해 몇몇 지도자들이 싸우고 있었다.

One of them was Oda Nobunaga.

그중 한 명이 Oda Nobunaga(오다 노부나가)였다.

His goal was to unite Japan.

그의 목표는 일본을 통일하는 것이었다.

One day, Nobunaga met a man named Yasuke.

어느 날, Nobunaga는 Yasuke(야스케)라는 남자를 만났다.

He stood out for two reasons.

그는 두 가지 이유에서 눈에 띄었다.

The first was his height —he was thirty centimeters taller than most Japanese men at that time.

첫 번째는 그의 키였는데, 그는 그 당시 대부분의 일본 남자들보다30센티미터나 더 컸다.

The second was his dark skin.

두 번째는 그의 어두운 피부였다.

Yasuke was African, but in those days, few Japanese people had met anyone from Africa.

Yasuke는 아프리카인이었다 하지만 그 당시에 아프리카에서 온 사람을 만나본 일본인은 거의 없었다.

So Nobunaga thought that his skin was painted.

그래서 Nobunaga는 그의 피부에 색이 칠해져 있었다고 여겼다.

He asked him to scrub the paint off his skin.

그는 그에게 그의 피부에서 물감을 문질러 닦으라고 요청했다.

But it was really his natural color.

하지만 그것은 정말 그의 타고난 색이었다.

Nobunaga was impressed by Yasuke.

Nobunaga는 Yasuke에게 깊은 인상을 받았다.

He made him his personal bodyguard and gave him the title of the first foreign samurai.

Yasuke fought many battles to help Nobunaga unite Japan.

However, Nobunaga was eventually killed by his rivals.

하지만 Nobunaga는 결국 그의 경쟁자들에게 살해당했다.

After Nobunaga’s death, Yasuke disappeared.

Nobunaga가 죽은 후, Yasuke는 사라졌다.

Nobody knows what happened to him.

그에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지 아무도 모른다.

Yasuke overcame prejudice in a foreign country, and his story reminds us that people should not be judged based on their appearance or background.

Yasuke는 외국에서 편견을 극복했다 그리고 그의 이야기는 우리에게 사람들은 그들의 외모나 배경으로 판단되어서는 안 된다는 것을 상기시킨다.
