Have you ever smelled the air after it rains?

당신은 비가 온 후에 공기 냄새를 맡아본 적이 있는가?

It has an earthy scent.

그것은 흙냄새를 가지고 있다.

Some people think it’s the smell of the rain itself.

어떤 사람들은 그것이 비 자체의 냄새라고 생각한다.

But rain doesn’t have a smell.

하지만 비는 냄새를 가지고 있지 않다.

In fact, the smell is caused by bacteria.

사실, 그 냄새는 박테리아에 의해 야기된다.

These bacteria live in the wet soil.

이 박테리아는 축축한 흙에 산다.

They produce something called geosmin.

그들은 geosmin(지오스민)이라고 불리는 것을 만들어 낸다.

Geosmin has a unique smell that we all recognize.

지오스민은 우리 모두가 인식하는 독특한 냄새를 가지고 있다.

It is usually located between rocks.

그것은 보통 바위들 사이에 (위치해) 있다.

When it rains, water hits the geosmin.

비가 오면, (빗)물이 지오스민을 튕겨낸다.

This causes it to enter the air.

이것은 그것이 공기에 들어가게 한다.

Then moisture in the air carries it to our noses.

그러면 공기 중의 수분이 그것을 우리의 코로 옮긴다.

That’s why we can smell an earthy scent on a rainy day.

그래서 우리는 비 오는 날에 흙냄새를 맡을 수 있다.
