In science fiction movies, there are often big space battles.

As the spaceships shoot at each other, you can hear loud sounds.

Interestingly, this would be impossible.

This is because there is no air in space!

When something makes sound, it creates sound waves.

These sound waves move through the air until they reach our ears.

In other words, without air, there is no sound.

So how can astronauts hear in space?

When they go outside the spaceship, they use radios in their helmets.

When they occur, Earth is sometimes affected.

However, thanks to a unique layer around Earth, solar storms cannot hit Earth directly.
