《위대한 첫 문장》

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

첫인상을 남길 두 번째 기회는 얻을 수 없다.

It is very important to make a good impression on others when we meet them for the first time.

우리가 누군가를 처음 만날 때 좋은 인상을 남기는 것은 매우 중요하다.

But people aren't the only ones who make first impressions ─ books do as well.

하지만 첫인상을 남기는 것은 사람만이 아니다. 책 역시 그렇다.

A powerful first line of a book can catch readers' attention and make them want to read on.

어떤 책의 강렬한 첫 문장은 독자들의 관심을 사로잡고 계속 읽고 싶게 만든다.

Authors often spend weeks, months, or even years coming up with the perfect opening line for their books.

작가들이 자신의 책의 완벽한 첫 문장을 생각해 내는 데 몇 주, 몇 달, 심지어 몇 년이 걸리는 일은 흔하다.

Let's take a look at some of them.

그것들 중 몇 가지를 살펴보자.

《"All children, except one, grow up." ─ Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie》

No one can stop the sands of time.

Every child becomes an adult whether they want to or not.

But the opening line of Peter Pan states that there is one child who is the exception to the rule.

He wants to have fun and stay a child forever.

One night in London, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell visit the home of Wendy, John, and Michael.

런던에서의 어느 날 밤, 피터 팬과 팅커벨은 웬디, 존, 마이클의 집에 방문한다.

Peter Pan invites them to a fantastic island in the sky called Neverland.

피터 팬은 네버랜드라는 하늘 위의 환상적인 섬으로 그들을 초대한다.

It is a magical place where dreams are born and excitement never ends.

그곳은 꿈이 만들어지고 신나는 일이 끝없이 벌어지는 마법의 장소이다.

The children take Peter Pan's hand and their adventure begins.

아이들이 피터 팬의 손을 잡고 그들의 모험이 시작된다.

Only children can visit Neverland, and they do not grow up as long as they remain there.

오직 어린이들만 네버랜드를 방문할 수 있으며, 그곳에 있는 한 어린이들은 성장하지 않는다.

They have a wonderful time in Neverland.

그들은 네버랜드에서 멋진 시간을 보낸다.

But in the end, the three children decide to return home and grow up.

What comes to mind when you hear the word "camp?"

'캠프'라는 단어를 들으면 무엇이 떠오르는가?

Many people would think of fun activities like fishing, having a barbecue, and sleeping under the beautiful stars.

많은 사람들이 낚시하기, 바비큐 해 먹기, 아름다운 별들 아래서 잠들기와 같은 재미있는 활동을 떠올릴 것이다.

So what kind of place do you imagine Camp Green Lake is?

그렇다면 초록 호수 캠프는 어떤 장소라고 상상이 되는가?

Perhaps it is a beautiful place where a green forest surrounds a blue lake.

아마도 초록빛 숲이 푸른 호수를 둘러싸고 있는 아름다운 곳일 것이다.

But the first line of Holes paints a different picture.

하지만 구덩이의 첫 번째 문장은 이와 다른 장면을 그려낸다.

It states that there is no lake there despite its name.

그 문장은 그 이름에도 불구하고 그곳에는 호수가 없다고 말한다.

Through this irony, Sachar is hinting that Camp Green Lake is not a normal camp with fun and games.

이런 역설을 통해 새커는 초록 호수 캠프는 재미와 게임이 있는 평범한 캠프가 아니라는 것을 암시하고 있다.

In fact, Camp Green Lake is not a camp at all.

사실, 초록 호수 캠프는 캠프라고 할 수 없다.

Located in the desert, it is like a prison for bad boys.

사막에 위치한 불량소년들의 감옥과 같은 곳이다.

The main character of the book, a teenage boy named Stanley Yelnats, is different from the other boys in the camp.

이 책의 주인공인 스탠리 옐네츠라는 십 대 소년은 캠프의 다른 소년들과는 다르다.

He hasn't done anything wrong.

그는 잘못한 것이 없다.

He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Stanley and the other boys at Camp Green Lake are expected to improve their character by digging holes every day.

Stanley suspects that there is another reason for the digging.

But George Orwell's well-known novel, 1984, opens with the clocks striking thirteen times.

하지만 조지 오웰의 유명한 소설인 1984는 열세 번 치는 시계로 시작한다.

In a normal world, a clock striking thirteen is out of the ordinary.

정상적인 세계에서 열세 번 치는 시계는 결코 평범한 것이 아니다.

But in this mysterious place, it doesn't seem to be unusual.

하지만 이 불가사의한 곳에서는 그것이 특별해 보이지 않는다.

Not just one clock but all clocks strike thirteen here.

이곳에서는 하나의 시계만이 아니라 모든 시계가 열세 번 친다.

What's more, the number thirteen is often associated with bad luck in Western cultures.

뿐만 아니라, 서구 문화에서 13이라는 숫자는 종종 불운과 연관된다.

In this way, Orwell hints to the readers that they are about to enter a world that is dark and unfamiliar.

이런 식으로 오웰은 독자들에게 곧 어둡고 생소한 세계로 들어갈 것이라는 암시를 준다.

The story takes place in an imaginary country called Oceania in the year 1984.
