Ker-plunk! / Something splashes into the pond.

풍덩! / 무언가가 연못안으로 청범 뛰어들었어요.

A frog! / It has strong back legs.

개구리에요! / 그것은 강한 뒷다리들을 가지고있어요.

It has webbed feet. / It swims fast.

그것은 물갈퀴발을 가지고 있어요. / 그것은 빠르게 수영해요.

Frogs feel at home in the pond. / Why?

개구리는 연못에서 집처럼 편안해요. / 왜냐구요?

Because they begin life in the water - as tiny frog eggs.

왜냐하면 그들은 물속에서 삶을 시작해요 - 아주 작은 개구리 알로요.

In the spring, a mother frog lays lots of eggs.

봄에, 엄마 개구리는 아주 많은 알을 낳아요.

The eggs hatch. / Frog babies swim out.

그 알들이 부화해요. / 아기 개구리들이 수영해 나와요.

They look like fish. / They swim like fish. / They even breathe underwater like fish.

그들은 물고기처럼 보여요. / 그들은 물고기처럼 헤엄쳐요. / 그들은 심지어 물고기처럼 물속에서 호흡해요.

But they are not fish. / They are tadpoles. / They will grow up to be frogs.

그러나 그들은 물고기가 아니에요. / 그들은 올챙이들이에요. / 그들은 개구리로 자랄거에요.

Soon the tadpoles change. / They get bigger. / They grow little back legs, then front legs.

곧 올챙이들인 변화해요. / 그들은 더 커져요. / 그들은 작은 뒷 다리가, 그리고 나서 앞다리가 나와요.

And little by little, their tails shrink and disappear! / Something also changes inside them.

그리고 조금씩, 그들의 꼬리가 줄어들다가 사라지죠! / 또한 무엇가가 그들 내부에서도 변화해요.

Now the baby frogs can breathe out of the water, like we do.

이제 아기개구리들은 물밖에서 호흡할 수 있어요, 마치 우리가 그러하듯요.

The frogs hop onto a log. / They are now land animals. / They still can swim.

개구리들은 통나무 위에서 펄쩍 뜁니다. / 그들은 이제 육지 동물이에요. / 그들은 여전히 헤엄칠 수 있어요.

But they are not water animals anymore.

그러나 그들은 더이상 수중 동물이 아니에요.

Animals that change this way are called amphibians.

이와 같은 방식으로 변하는 동물을 양서류라고 불러요.

Are frogs the only amphibians? / No.

개구리는 유일한 양서류인가요? / 아니에요.

Toads are amphibians, too. / Toads usually have bumpy skin and shorter legs than frogs.

두꺼비들도 양서류입니다. / 두꺼비들은 보통 개구리보다 더 울퉁불퉁한 피부와 더 짧은 다리를 가지고 있어요.

There are about 4,000 kinds of frogs. / They live all over the world.

약 4,000종류의 개구리들이 있어요. / 그들은 전세계적으로 분포해요.

Most frogs are the size of your hand. / But the biggest frog is called the Goliath frog, like the giant.

This picture is about the same size as the real frog.

Tree frogs are so tiny they can stand on your fingertip.

Their sticky toes help them hold on tight!

Sometimes at night you can hear tree frogs croak.

가끔씩 밤에 여러분은 나무 개구리들이 개굴거리는 소리를 들을 수 있어요.

Lots of frogs croak. / They croak to find mates.

아주 많은 개구리들이 개굴거려요. / 그들은 짝을 찾기 위해 개굴거리는 거에요.

They also croak to warn other frogs of danger.

그들은 또한 다른 개구리들에게 위험을 경고하기 위해 개굴거리죠.

Many animals like to eat frogs. / But these pretty frogs are safe.

많은 동물들이 개구리를 잡아먹기를 좋아해요. / 그러나 이 예쁜 개구리들은 안전해요.

Why doesn't the bird eat them? / Because they have poison on their skin.

Snakes like to eat frogs. / But this Asian leaf frog is safe.

The snake can't see it in the pile of leaves.

The barking frog fools its enemies another way. / It puffs itself up.

Now it looks too big to eat. / But most frogs in danger do the same thing.
