Smoke detectors, MRI, and running shoes — what do all these inventions have in common?
It may sound strange, but they were all made possible by space research.
NASA does research to create new technologies and products for their space program.
But this research also creates products we can use on Earth.
One example is smoke detectors.
They were first used in the space station in 1973 to detect any dangerous gases.
Now smoke detectors are used in most homes and buildings to warn people of fire.
NASA also developed ways to make the signals sent from spacecraft clearer.
Thanks to this technology, doctors now have MRI.
Also, the material for running shoes came from the special boots for astronauts.
It lessens the shock from running.
Some people say NASA spends too much money on its space research.
And it’s true that its research costs billions of dollars every year.
But NASA’s work doesn’t just stay in space.
People on Earth get to use it too, sometimes every day.
Here are two students’ opinions on space research.
Sabrina: There are many serious problems here on Earth.
So it doesn’t make sense to spend billions of dollars on space research.
Thousands of people die of hunger every day.
Some people say we can get useful resources from space.
But there are resources here on Earth that aren’t used enough yet.
Why don’t we spend money on solar energy and wind energy instead?
José: Most importantly, humans must plan for the future.
After many years, Earth may become too hot and too crowded to live on.
So we should keep using space research to look for other places to live in space.
Also, curiosity is the start of all science.
Without it, we might still be living in caves!
Our curiosity helps us do amazing things.
