Throughout history, different cultures used very different number systems from the one we use today.
So how did we end up with our current numbers?
The earliest numbers took the form of tally marks.
Our ancestors used these marks to count animals in their flocks.
This tally system worked well for some time.
But as societies became more complex, we needed to write larger numbers, and tally marks became too inconvenient.
Just imagine having to make 100 individual marks!
To solve this problem, people began using symbols in place of certain numbers.
Ancient Romans used symbols like V and X for “five” and “ten,” whereas the ancient Greeks used symbols like Π and Δ.
The symbols made it much easier to write large numbers.
However, they had to create a new symbol every time they wanted to express a larger amount.
Some cultures developed positional systems to overcome this problem.
In a positional system, the location of a symbol tells you how big it is.
For example, the symbol 3 means “three,” but when it is written on the left, as in 31, the same symbol now means “thirty.”
The benefit of these systems is that they don’t require new symbols.
Still, many positional systems didn’t have a symbol for zero.
Some used a blank space for zero, which made it confusing to distinguish between certain numbers.
For instance, does “2 2” mean “twenty-two,” or “two hundred two”?
It’s not clear.
The use of zero made it easier to tell these numbers apart.
Thanks to the positional system and the use of zero, we can now write any number easily and accurately—even large numbers like 208,001,372!
