Bridges have helped people cross rivers and streams for centuries.

Throughout history, builders have used diverse materials to make them.

But deep within India’s jungles, there are bridges made from living trees.

The Indian state of Meghalaya is one of Earth’s wettest places.

인도의 Meghalaya주는 지구의 가장 습한 곳 중 하나이다.

During the summer monsoon, heavy rain makes it nearly impossible to cross streams and rivers on foot.

Long ago, the local Khasi people would build bridges using bamboo, but the bridges would rot and collapse.

So the Khasi developed a new method of bridge building: the living root bridge.

A living root bridge is made by planting a Ficus elastica tree on each side of a riverbank.

These trees have special roots that grow outside of the soil.

Khasi bridge builders guide the roots across the river and weave them together.

This process takes about fifteen to twenty years to complete.

It takes much longer than conventional bridges made of concrete or steel.

However, living root bridges have many advantages.

하지만, 살아있는 뿌리 다리들은 많은 장점들을 가지고 있다.

Unlike conventional bridges, root bridges grow stronger over time.

일반 다리들과는 다르게, 뿌리 다리들은 시간이 지날수록 더 강해진다.

As long as the trees are maintained and kept healthy, the roots become stronger as the tree grows.

나무들이 관리되고 건강하게 유지되는 한, 뿌리들은 나무가 자랄수록 강해진다.

The bridges are also better for the environment.

이 다리들은 또한 환경에도 더 좋다.

Since they are made from living trees, they absorb greenhouse gases as part of the ecosystem.

살아있는 나무들로 만들어졌기 때문에, 그것들은 생태계의 일부로서 온실가스를 흡수한다.

What’s more, living root bridges cost almost nothing to build.

게다가 살아있는 뿌리 다리들은 짓는 데에 거의 비용이 들지 않는다.

They don’t require expensive materials like concrete and steel.

Instead, you just need trees and time.

Living root bridges aren’t better than modern bridges in every way.

However, they offer a practical example of a more sustainable way to build things.
