Look at the people around you. Some have pale skin, while others have dark skin.

Long ago, our ancestors lived in the southern half of Africa.

This area receives large amounts of sunlight.

Although sunlight is necessary for life, it contains harmful UV light.

It can even cause skin cancer.

When sunlight hits our skin, the body produces melanin to protect it.

Later, some of our ancestors migrated north.

So they were less healthy than those with less melanin.

Our ancestors had to change to survive in many different sunlight conditions.
