How a Virus Destroyed an Empire

In 1519, Spanish explorer and soldier Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico.

Within two years, he and his five hundred men had conquered the Aztec Empire, a nation of sixteen million people.

How did this great empire fall so easily?

When Europeans began to explore other parts of the world, some diseases traveled with them.

One of them was smallpox.

This deadly virus spread through close contact with infected people.

What’s more, none of their traditional remedies had any effect.

The Aztecs typically cured skin diseases with steam baths in saunas.

But since everyone was so close together, this made the disease spread more quickly.

In this way, smallpox helped Cortés conquer the Aztecs.
