침묵의 날

Last December, Sage and his parents moved to Bali.

지난 12월, Sage와 그의 부모님은 발리로 이사했다.

It was March now, and everyone was excited for Nyepi, the Hindu New Year.

3월이 되었고, 힌두교의 새해인 녀피 덕분에 모두 신나 있었다.

The evening before Nyepi, Sage and his parents walked with Budi, their neighbor, to the ogoh-ogoh parade.

녀피 전날 저녁, Sage와 부모님은 이웃인 Budi와 함께 ogoh-ogoh 퍼레이드에 갔다.

The closer they got to the parade, the louder it became.

퍼레이드에 가까이 갈수록 주위는 더 시끄러워졌다.

Sage was shocked when he saw the ogoh-ogoh.

Sage는 ogoh-ogoh를 보고 충격을 받았다.

The giant paper statues looked so scary.

거대한 종이 조각상이 너무 무섭게 생겼던 것이다.

Budi explained that the statues represent evil spirits.

Budi는 조각상이 악령을 상징한다고 설명했다.

When there is a lot of noise, the spirits become trapped in them.

소음이 많을 때, 악령이 그 안에 갇히게 된다.

At the end of the parade, people burned the statues to get rid of the evil spirits.

퍼레이드가 끝나고, 사람들은 악령을 없애기 위해 동상을 불태웠다.

Budi shared some other Nyepi traditions with Sage and his parents before saying goodbye.

작별 인사를 하기 전에 Budi는 Sage와 그의 부모님에게 다른 녀피 전통들을 알려 주었다.

When Sage woke up the next day, everything was completely silent.

다음 날 Sage가 일어났을 때, 모든 것이 완전히 조용했다.

Budi said Balinese people spend Nyepi quietly to trick evil spirits.

Budi는 발리 사람들이 악령을 속이기 위해 조용히 녀피를 보낸다고 말했었다.

No one goes outside, does any work, plays any games, or uses electricity.

아무도 밖에 나가거나, 일을 하거나, 게임을 하거나, 전기를 사용하지 않는다.

Because the island seems abandoned, the evil spirits feel bored and leave Bali alone.

왜냐하면 섬이 버려진 것 같이 보이면, 악령들은 지루함을 느껴 발리를 내버려두고 떠나기 때문이다.

Sage and his parents decided to spend Nyepi quietly too.

Sage와 그의 부모님도 녀피를 조용히 보내기로 결정했다.

They stayed inside all day and thought about their New Year’s resolutions.

그들은 하루 종일 집안에 머물면서 그들의 새해 다짐들에 대해 생각했다.

At night, they enjoyed looking at the stars through their living room window.

밤이 되자, 그들은 거실 창문을 통해 별을 바라보며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다.

It was a peaceful way to welcome the new year.
