Talking to Grandma

할머니와 대화하기

Allison’s grandmother was just diagnosed with dementia.

Allison의 할머니는 막 치매를 진단받았다.

So Allison’s family had her move in with them.

Allison wasn’t sure what dementia was, but she looked forward to living with her grandmother.

After a few days, Allison began to notice how hard it was to have a conversation with her.

But her grandmother just sat and stared at the ceiling.

Allison was worried.

So she searched the internet for tips on how to talk to people with dementia.

First, make eye contact before talking.

Second, offer only two choices at a time.

Third, don’t interrupt the person as they talk.

The next day, Allison made eye contact with her grandmother and held up two shirts.

“Grandma, do you like the green shirt or the purple shirt?” Allison asked.

"할머니, 초록색 셔츠가 좋아요, 보라색 셔츠가 좋아요?" Allison이 물었다.

She waited calmly as her grandmother decided.

Finally, her grandmother pointed at the green shirt and said, “This one.”

마침내, 할머니는 초록색 셔츠를 가리키며 “이거.”라고 말했다.

A huge grin broke out on Allison’s face.

“Great!” said Allison.
