Do you like to travel to new places?
When you travel, you can use a map to find your way around.
If you can read a map, you can go to places you have never been to!
There are three important parts of a map.
The first part is the compass rose.
The compass rose shows direction.
There are four directions: north, south, east, and west.
Maps also have a map key.
The map key explains the meaning of each symbol on the map.
Using the symbols, you can find different places on the map.
For example, do you see the airplane symbol on the map?
That tells you where the airport is!
Finally, maps have a scale.
Everything on a map is drawn smaller than it really is.
The scale helps you understand the real distance between places.
Now you know how to read a map.
Think about a place you’d like to visit.
Then grab a map and start finding your way there!
Long ago in France, there was a boy named Rene Descartes.
He was very sick, so he often stayed in bed.
One day, Descartes saw a fly on his ceiling.
After a few minutes, the fly flew to a different place on the ceiling.
Descartes wanted to tell his parents where he saw the fly.
Suddenly, he had an idea.
He drew blue lines from left to right on the ceiling.
He called them Line 1, Line 2, and Line 3.
He drew red lines from top to bottom.
They became Line A, Line B, and Line C.
When the fly moved, he drew a star in its place.
Then he told his parents how the fly had moved.
Mom, it flew from B3 to C1!
With his smart thinking, Descartes came up with a new way to describe a location on a map.
We call it the coordinate plane.
We use it to read maps and graphs.
Without Descartes, reading maps would not be the same!
One day, you are walking in the forest.
Suddenly, you are lost!
You look for your compass, but it’s not in your bag!
Don’t worry: Just use these tips to find your way!
First, look at the trees.
Trees can show you which direction you are walking in.
Trees closer to the north have fewer branches.
Also, moss is thicker on the north side of trees.
Moss grows well in shadowy, dark places.
So the north side of a tree is the best place for it to grow.
If you still can’t find your way, try looking for the North Star.
First, find the Big Dipper.
It is a group of stars shaped like a spoon.
The star at the end of the Big Dipper points to the North Star.
If you get lost in the forest, don’t panic.
Use nature as your compass.
That way, you’ll never be lost!
John and his daughter Margaret were slaves in Mississippi.
One night, they were gathering firewood.
John stopped and pointed to a quilt hanging on the fence.
John
We need to pack our things and leave tonight, he said.
How do you know, Dad? asked Margaret.
Do you see the boxes on the quilt? John said.
They mean it’s time to go.
Margaret was confused.
Margaret
Her father explained that it wasn’t an ordinary quilt: This freedom quilt had important information on it.
They could use it to escape!
They packed and left.
They used the North Star quilts to find their way north.
They saw a quilt with bear paws on it near a stream.
They could find food and water there.
They became tired.
Where will we stay along the way? Margaret asked.
Do you see the log cabin quilts? John said.
Those are safe places where we can sleep.
The people there will help us.
The freedom quilts guided them along their journey.
In a few months, they made it to Canada.
They could live there in freedom.
