Marshmallows are a soft and tasty snack.
마시멜로는 부드럽고 맛있는 간식이다.
They are used in puddings, chocolate bars, and many other desserts.
그것들은 푸딩, 초콜릿 바, 그리고 다른 많은 후식에 사용된다.
But what does “marshmallow” mean?
그런데 ‘마시멜로’는 무엇을 의미할까?
The word “marshmallow” comes from a plant’s name and the place it grows.
‘마시멜로’라는 단어는 식물의 이름과 그것이 자라는 장소로부터 온다.
This plant is called a wild mallow.
이 식물은 야생 아욱(mallow)이라고 불린다.
It grows in wetlands called marshes.
그것은 marsh라고 불리는 습지에서 자란다.
Long ago, Greeks used marshmallows to heal injuries.
오래전, 그리스인들은 상처를 치료하기 위해 마시멜로를 사용했다.
They were like medicine!
그것들은 약과 같았다!
Later, Egyptians made a dessert with them.
나중에 이집트인들은 그것들로 후식을 만들었다.
They mixed them with nuts and honey.
그들은 견과류와 꿀을 그것들에 섞었다.
But modern marshmallows came from France.
그러나 현대의 마시멜로는 프랑스에서 왔다.
In the nineteenth century, French candy store owners mixed mallow plant roots with sugar, egg whites, and water.
19세기에 프랑스의 사탕 가게 주인들은 아욱 식물의 뿌리를 설탕, 달걀 흰자, 그리고 물과 섞었다.
People loved them!

But they took too long to make, so gelatin was used instead of the mallow plant.

For this reason, today’s marshmallows don’t have any mallow plant in them.

The whoopie pie is a traditional American dessert.

It is made of two cake-like cookies with a cream center.
그것은 두 개의 케이크 같은 쿠키 가운데 크림을 넣어 만들어진다.
This cream is usually vanilla flavored, and chocolate cookies are typically used.
이 크림은 보통 바닐라 맛이 나고, 초콜릿 쿠키가 일반적으로 사용된다.
However, pumpkin and gingerbread cookies can be used too.
하지만, 호박과 생강 쿠키도 사용될 수 있다.
Whoopie pies are certainly a delicious treat.
우피 파이는 분명히 맛있는 간식이다.
But where did their unusual name come from?
그런데 그 특이한 이름은 어디에서 생겨났을까?
According to one legend, excited children would yell “Whoopee!” when they received one.
한 전설에 따르면, 아이들이 우피 파이 하나를 받았을 때 신이 난 아이들은 “우피(야호)!”라고 소리치곤 했다.
People have been enjoying whoopie pies for many years, and they are still popular today.
사람들은 오랫동안 우피 파이를 즐겨 오고 있고, 그것들은 오늘날 여전히 인기 있다.
In fact, in 2011, the whoopie pie even became the official state treat of the US state of Maine.
실제로, 2011년에 우피 파이는 미국 메인 주의 공식적인 주 간식이 되기도 했다.
