Many people think that only humans use tools.

많은 사람들은 인간만이 도구를 사용한다고 생각한다.

However, some animals use objects in their environment as tools.

그러나 일부 동물들은 그들의 환경에 있는 사물들을 도구로 사용한다.

Sea otters, for example, use rocks as tools.

예를 들어, 해달은 돌을 도구로 사용한다.

When a sea otter finds a hard shell with a tasty sea creature inside, it looks for a big rock.

해달은 맛있는 바다 생물이 들어 있는 딱딱한 조개껍데기를 발견하면, 커다란 돌을 찾는다.

Then the otter hits the hard shell on the rock.

그런 다음 해달은 그 딱딱한 조개껍데기를 돌 위에 친다.

The shell opens up and the otter eats the creature inside.

Chimpanzees also use tools.

They use a stick to catch termites.

Because termites live inside mounds, chimps can’t catch them by hand.

So, a chimp finds a branch and pulls off its leaves and side branches.

Then it breaks the stick to the perfect size.

It then carefully puts it into a hole in the termite mound.

When the chimp pulls the branch back out, it can enjoy the tasty termites that stick to it.

Scientists wanted to know more about how animals use tools.

So, they put naked mole-rats in plastic tubes.

The mole-rats chewed holes in the plastic to get out.
