We cannot think of New Zealand without thinking of the Maori, the native people of New Zealand.

They sailed there from Polynesia 1,000 years ago and started living in small groups all over the country.

Each group developed its own history and culture.

In the nineteenth century, the British arrived in New Zealand.

They wanted to control New Zealand, so they made an agreement with the Maori leaders.

They promised to protect the Maori way of life.

For many years, though, the Maori had a hard time.

They died from diseases and in wars with the British.

Today there are more than 875,000 Maori people in New Zealand, and their culture and language are still important.
