Meals are an important part of our lives.

식사는 우리의 삶에서 중요한 부분이다.

They are an opportunity to spend time with friends or family.

Some people, unfortunately, are not able to fully enjoy this experience.

안타깝게도, 어떤 사람들은 이런 경험을 온전히 즐길 수 없다.

This is because they suffer from Parkinson’s disease.

이는 그들이 파킨슨 병을 앓고 있기 때문이다.

Parkinson’s disease affects the nervous system, so it causes people to shake uncontrollably.

파킨슨병은 신경계에 영향을 미쳐, 사람들이 통제할 수 없이 떨게 만든다.

This makes it extremely difficult for them to lift food from their plates to their mouths.

이것은 그들이 접시에서 입으로 음식을 들어 올리는 것을 극히 힘들게 만든다.

In the past, special devices were used to stop their hands from shaking.

과거에는 손이 떨리는 것을 막기 위해 특수한 장치가 사용되었다.

But they weren’t very effective.

하지만 그것들은 크게 효과적이지 않았다.

A new electronic spoon called Liftware, however, is different.

하지만, Liftware라고 불리는 새로운 전자 숟가락은 다르다.

Instead of trying to stop the hand from shaking, Liftware stops the spoon itself.

손이 떨리는 것을 막으려 하는 것 대신, Liftware는 숟가락 그 자체를 멈춘다.

This device uses the same anti-shake technology as digital cameras.

이 장치는 디지털카메라와 같은 손 떨림 방지 기술을 사용한다.

When a person’s hand shakes, tiny motors in its handle move the spoon’s bowl in the opposite direction.

사람의 손이 떨면, 손잡이에 있는 아주 작은 모터가 숟가락의 우묵한 부분을 그 반대 방향으로 움직인다.

As a result, shaking is reduced by about 75%.

결과적으로, 떨림이 대략 75퍼센트 감소하게 된다.

This is important because people with Parkinson’s disease often have to be fed by others.

파킨슨병을 앓고 있는 사람들은 보통 타인이 먹여줘야 하기 때문에 이것은 중요하다.

But Liftware allows them to feed themselves.

하지만 Liftware는 그들이 자기 자신을 먹일 수 있도록 해준다.

This makes them more independent and allows them to enjoy their meals again.

이는 그들을 더욱 독립적으로 만들어주고 그들이 다시 식사를 즐길 수 있도록 해준다.
