In 1796, scientist Edward Jenner injected an 8-year-old boy with cowpox.

Jenner correctly believed that surviving the weak cowpox virus would protect the boy from the much more dangerous virus, smallpox.
Jenner는 약한 우두 바이러스를 견뎌내는 것이 훨씬 더 위험한 바이러스인 천연두로부터 그 남자아이를 보호할 것이라고 정확히 믿었다.
This was the first vaccine in the world.
이것이 세계 최초의 백신이었다.
It worked because of the body’s immune system.
그것은 신체의 면역 체계 때문에 효과가 있었다.
The immune system protects the body.
면역 체계는 신체를 보호한다.
When a virus attacks, we get symptoms such as a cough or fever.
바이러스가 공격하면, 우리는 기침이나 열과 같은 증상을 얻는다.
This means that the immune system is fighting the virus.
이것은 면역 체계가 바이러스와 싸우고 있다는 것을 의미한다.
The immune system tries to remove the virus, and records information about it.
면역 체계는 바이러스를 없애려 하고, 그것에 관한 정보를 기록한다.
So if the same virus attacks again, the immune system remembers how to beat it.
그래서 같은 바이러스가 다시 공격하면, 면역 체계는 그것을 물리치는 방법을 기억한다.
The vaccine contains weak or even dead virus cells, so the infection won’t develop into a disease.
백신은 약하거나 심지어 죽은 바이러스 세포를 함유하므로, 감염이 질병으로 발전하지는 않는다.
However, the body thinks it’s a serious threat.
하지만, 신체는 그것이 심각한 위협이라고 생각한다.
This builds the body’s defense system so it will be ready if the full-strength virus actually invades in the future.
이 점이 신체 방어 체계를 만들어서 미래에 온전한 바이러스가 실제로 침입하면 대비가 되는 것이다.
There are still some diseases that we can’t make vaccines for, but scientists hope that one day we will be able to make vaccines for every dangerous virus!
