Q: I read the following sentences but couldn’t understand them.

Q: 저는 다음에 나오는 문장들을 읽었는데 그것들을 이해할 수 없었어요.

“I argued with my classmate, but no one was in my corner.

“나는 반 친구와 다퉜는데, 아무도 ‘나의 코너에 있지’ 않았어.

I threw in the towel and apologized first because I was totally on the ropes.”

완전히 ‘로프로 몰렸기’ 때문에 나는 ‘수건을 던지고’ 먼저 사과했어.”

Can you explain them?

그것들을 설명해 주실 수 있나요?

A: Actually, those expressions are from boxing.

A: 사실 그 표현들은 권투에서 온 것입니다.

Over a century ago in England, boxing was so popular that several boxing terms entered the English language.

백 년도 더 전의 영국에서는, 권투가 매우 인기가 있어서 몇몇 권투 용어가 영어에 들어오게 됐죠.

1. “In my corner”

1. ‘In my corner’

Between rounds of a boxing match, boxers rest in opposite corners of the ring while their coaches encourage them.

권투 경기의 라운드 사이에, 권투 선수들은 링의 맞은편 코너에서 휴식을 취하고 그동안 코치들이 그들을 북돋아 줍니다.

So “in my corner” means that someone is on my side.

그래서 ‘in my corner’는 누군가가 나의 편에 있다는 것을 의미합니다.

Traditionally, boxers’ coaches admitted defeat by throwing a towel into the ring, so “throw in the towel” means to give up.

전통적으로, 권투 선수의 코치들은 링 안으로 수건을 던짐으로써 패배를 인정했고, 그래서 ‘throw in the towel’은 항복한다는 뜻입니다.

There are four ropes around the edge of a boxing ring.

When a boxer is driven onto the ropes by the opponent, he or she is nearly defeated.

권투 선수가 상대편에 의해 로프로 몰리면, 그 선수는 거의 패배한 것이죠.

So “on the ropes” means to be in trouble.

따라서 ‘on the ropes’는 곤경에 처했다는 의미입니다.
