In the morning, / his granddad took him to the school.
아침에 / 그의 할아버지는 그를 학교에 데리고 갔다.
When he went onto the playground with his grandson, / the children surrounded them.
그가 그의 손자와 함께 운동장으로 들어갔을 때, / 아이들이 그들을 둘러쌌다.
“What a funny old man,” / one boy smirked.
“진짜 우스꽝스러운 할아버지다.”라며 / 한 소년이 히죽히죽 웃었다.
A girl with brown hair / pointed at the pair / and jumped up and down.
갈색 머리 소녀가 / 그 둘(노인과 소년)을 향해 손가락질하며 / 위아래로 뛰었다.
Suddenly, the bell rang / and the children ran off to their first lesson.
갑자기 종이 울렸고, / 아이들이 그들의 첫 수업에 급히 뛰어갔다.
The old man took his grandson firmly by the hand, / and led him out of the school gate.
노인은 손자의 손을 꽉 잡고, / 그를 교문 밖으로 데리고 나갔다.
“Brilliant, I don’t have to go to school!” / the boy exclaimed.
“굉장한 걸, 나 학교에 가지 않아도 되네!”라고 / 소년이 소리쳤다.
“You do, but not this one,” / his granddad replied.
“가긴 가야지, 그렇지만 이 학교는 아니야.”라고 / 할아버지가 대답했다.
“I’ll find you a school myself.” / Granddad took his grandson back to his own house, / asked grandma to look after him, / and went off to look for a teacher himself.
“내가 직접 네게 학교를 찾아주마.” / 할아버지는 손자를 집으로 데리고 돌아가 / 할머니에게 그를 돌봐달라고 하고 나서, / 그 자신이 선생님을 찾아 나섰다.
Every time he spotted a school, / the old man went onto the playground, / and waited for the children to come out at break time.
학교를 발견할 때마다, / 노인은 운동장으로 들어가서 / 아이들이 쉬는 시간에 나오기를 기다렸다.
In some schools / the children completely ignored the old man / and in others, they made fun of him.
몇몇 학교에서는 / 아이들이 노인을 완전히 무시했고, / 다른 학교들에서는 아이들이 그를 놀렸다.
When this happened, / he would turn sadly / and go home.
이런 일이 일어났을 때, / 그는 슬프게 돌아서서 / 집으로 가곤 했다.
Finally, / he went onto the tiny playground of a very small school, / and leant against the fence, exhausted.
마침내, / 그는 매우 작은 한 학교의 아주 작은 운동장으로 들어섰고, / 지쳐서 울타리에 기댔다.
The bell rang, / and the crowd of children ran out / onto the playground.
종이 울렸고, / 아이들의 무리가 달려 나왔다. / 운동장으로
“Sir, are you all right? Shall I bring you a glass of water?” / a voice said.
“할아버지, 괜찮으세요? 물 한 잔 가져다 드릴까요?” / 누군가가 말했다.
“We’ve got a bench in the playground / - come and sit down,” / another voice said.
“우리 운동장에 벤치가 있어요 / - 오셔서 앉으세요.” / 또 다른 누군가가 말했다.
Soon a young teacher came out onto the playground.
곧 한 젊은 선생님이 운동장으로 나왔다.
The old man greeted him and said: / “Finally, I’ve found my grandson the best school in town.”
노인은 그에게 인사하면서 이렇게 말했다. / “마침내, 제가 제 손자에게 마을 최고의 학교를 찾아주었네요.”
“You’re mistaken, sir. / Our school is not the best - / it’s small and cramped.”
“잘못 아신 겁니다, 어르신. / 우리 학교는 최고가 아니에요 - / 작고 비좁은걸요.”
The old man didn’t argue with the teacher.
노인은 선생님과 논쟁을 벌이지 않았다.
Instead, / he made arrangements for his grandson to join the school, / and then the old man left.
대신, / 그는 손자가 그 학교에 다닐 수 있도록 준비해주고, / 그런 다음에 노인은 떠났다.
That evening, / the boy’s mom said to him: / “Dad, you can’t even read. / How do you know / you’ve found the best teacher of all?”
그날 저녁, / 소년의 어머니는 그에게 말했다. / “아버지, 글을 읽을 줄도 모르시잖아요. / 어떻게 아세요?” / 최고의 선생님을 찾았다는 것을
“Judge a teacher by his pupils,” / the old man replied.
